The Shunyo-kai art group is still going strong today, 100 years after its founding. Many of its members were artists who were indispensable to the history of modern Japanese Western-style painting, and they developed their own worlds in an effort to elevate Western-style oil painting into Japanese oil painting. Through over 100 works by the roughly 50 members of the group, including founding members Ryusei Kishida, Ryuzaburo Umehara, Hoan Kosugi, Tei Yamamoto, Shohachi Kimura, Issei Nakagawa, and Tetsugoro Yorozu, Oka Shikanosuke, who studied European painting in depth and created his own unique, tranquil world, and printmakers Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Toshiro Maeda, Shichibun Kiyomiya, and Tetsuro Komai, this exhibition traces the group's development from its founding to the postwar period, and looks back on one trend in modern Japanese art.
